Public model walkthrough

What does an IFC material
assignment actually tell you?

This walkthrough uses the public KIT house sample in Model Lab. It demonstrates an information review; the building model was not produced by Soban Consulting.

1. Open the public sample

Open Model Lab and load the sample model. Start with a full view, then filter to a category such as walls so the information is easier to inspect.

2. Inspect a representative element

Select a wall and read its IFC type, identifier and material information in the element panel. Some source names are in German and are preserved from the original model.

A material name describes an assignment in the file. It does not by itself verify a specification, installed product or environmental impact.

3. Compare assignments

Use material colours to compare the visible assignments. Use the missing-material check to find rendered elements without a usable named material assignment, then inspect those elements individually.

Missing names can reflect export settings, incomplete source information or an element for which a material is not relevant. Each finding needs context before it becomes an issue.

4. Record the question

Add a note to an element describing what needs clarification. Export an annotated image to show the model context and download the notes JSON to retain the element references. Notes remain in the current browser tab until it is closed or refreshed.

What this demonstrates

Model inspection, material-assignment comparison and element-linked review notes. It does not produce a verified bill of materials or life-cycle assessment.
